“Over The Line”, second in the Alpha Ops series by Emmy Curtis is intelligent, witty, exciting and definitely holds the interest of the readers. My first of reading Emmy Curtis and I will definitely go for round two.

Beth Garcia is an Army Special Forces Sergeant and one kick ass Sergeant respected by everyone. She owes her life to Jack Walker, in Afghanistan, big time when she is hit. Now back on the job after intense physical therapy, she ends up meeting Jack Walker accidentally.

Chance meeting and former attraction leads to friendship and getting to know each other. So when Jack Walker needs a favor from her to pose as his fiancé, she is all game to have some fun and pay back the debt. Jack Walker’s family is big in society and they have no clue what Jack does for a living. And this may be the wedge between them as they realize their feelings going beyond friendship and can Jack go after Beth once the charade is over, to claim her is the million dollar question.

Playing being engaged, wedding preparations in the air, and with a killer on the loose, Jack and Beth find themselves more than just being friends. Emmy Curtis’s narration holds wit and suspense. Beth and Jack are two lovable characters and she does a very good job of keeping that chemistry going and holding the suspense until it is revealed.

I am not a big fan of young adult stories or books written in first person. Having said that, I do read a handful of authors who have written this genre in first person and have enjoyed them. Did I say ‘a handful’ of authors, and I meant literally…. and did I also mention that I am not a fan of cliff hangers and stories going into 2nd and 3rd books…well then!

But the duo sisters of Melanie and Shawna make this work. They are making me take back all my inhibitions of reading this new genre and “Someday Girl”, first in their new young adult series, Someday Series, is much more than just young love, strong language or raging hormones.

Cat Nichols is headed to college. New life. New friends. New home. A life she can have, far away from loneliness and insecurities. Open skies, breathing the air of freedom, all far away from the shadows of gossip and masks where she can be a normal young adult. She may be shy, but she’s got a heart of gold and opens it to the stirrings of first love and its flavor.

Jace Butler comes back from the land of wars and for a young age, has demons that dog his life. A chance meeting with Cat, stirs emotions and feelings long buried and as he falls in love with her, he realizes that life is worth living for something as beautiful as Cat and her love. But the past seems to have a relentless hold on his present and his future looks uncertain.

This is just the beginning of a journey that takes Jace and Cat on its winding path, as they discover the reality of life. Experiences and pain will make them strong. Family and friends will have them question loyalty and support. Society and the world may drive them apart, before they can come together. Can they weather the storms of life as they grow and mature in feelings, and keep that tenacious hold on love and trust, is what the Someday Series is all about.

It’s charming, it’s real, it’s crisp, it’s youthful and it can very well be my almost young adult daughter heading into her story of life.

Don’t miss the second and third, “One Day His” (October 2014) and “Forever Us” (November 2014) respectively, if you want to know whether Jace and Cat got their HEA

I grew up on Janet Dailey’s books published via Mills & Boon. She was one of my favorite authors and it was a monthly ritual to raid a bookstore for her books. I’ve enjoyed her Bannon Brothers Series and the Calder Series and have enjoyed them.

Her latest “Christmas In Cowboy Country” (Bennett Series), is unfortunately a disappointment for me. Considering that Janet Dailey is no more, I’m guessing that someone else’s completed her unfinished works. I can definitely see the difference in the narration and writing and was not able to hold my interest.

Ski instructor Annie Bennett is back at her home ranch as she recovers from an accident and helps around her parents ranch. Marshall Stone is in Vail under the guise of a real estate surveyor trying to apprehend some real estate con artists. Annie meets Marshall, love blossoms and as the truth is revealed, they fall in love, too soon too fast!

I couldn’t relate to Annie and Marshall. The plot was very thin and the characters did not have any depth and was hard for me to like them or be in their minds to enjoy the book. The romance was lackluster and I couldn’t feel the chemistry between Annie and Marshall.

I really feel very sad writing an unsatisfactory review for one of Janet Dailey’s book, as I’ve always enjoyed her previous works. Die-hard fans of Janet Dailey may still enjoy the book.
