Karen Whiddon is another first for me ad so is her latest release, “A Secret Colton Baby” of her series The Coltons: Return To Wyoming.

Theo Colton literally gets saddled with a baby, dropped off by his socialite girlfriend, and ends up dying with a mysterious virus. His new cook Ellie Park inevitably ends becoming the nanny of the baby.

Theo moves back home after sustaining a severe back injury in one his rodeo competitions, and is taking care of the family ranch. Ellie Park is running away from a stalker and ends up at Theo’s ranch as a cook, but unfortunately the stalker follows her.

Sparks fly between Theo and Ellie, as they try to adjust to the addition of a new member to the Colton clan. Between trying to find the stalker wanting to kill Ellie, to an unknown virus that seems to be taking the lives of people in Dead River, and raising a baby, there seems to be a lot happening in Dead River.

Unfortunately, the various dynamics seem to rob the story of its essence and no single aspect of the story seems to be properly developed. Mind you, it’s not a bad story or a boring read. It’s just that there are people everywhere, incidents everywhere and too much happening everywhere. A lot of things seem to be cramped into a shorter version. It would have made a great book, if the story was developed properly into a longer version, the characters were given the right progression and development and the story would have been a great read.

This is my first read of Lynette Eason, and her new book “The Lawman Returns”, may not be her very best. I’ve gone through her books and she’s got books with reviews over a 1000 for some. So the jury is still out there, from my side.

“The Lawman Returns” is set in Wrangler’s Corner, a small town in Tennessee. Clarke Starke returns to his hometown as a Deputy and is hell bent on getting to the bottom of mystery surrounding his brother’s death, who was a deputy. Sabrina Mayfield is a social worker, trying not to repeat the mistakes her mother made, and stick to her profession of helping children.

LawmanReturns-LynetteEason-Oct2014

Circumstances and a killer on the loose bring Clarke and Sabrina together and eventually get under one roof, as they try to uncover the face behind the evil and the meth that seems to be making its presence strong. Loyalty and love are tested, as past pain and hurt bring some emotional outbursts and feelings into the open.

It has a good story, but unfortunately it seems to be told in a very fast and confusing narration. The attraction between Clarke and Sabrina seems to be forced and too soon. Individually their characters are likeable, but the process of developing feelings for each other was not given enough justice. It is still a good book to read, it just fell below my expectations.

Having said that, I just went and bought Lynette Eason’s “Too Close To Home” (Woman Of Justice Series #1).

“On Her Father’s Grave” starts off with a bang, leading the series Rogue River,” co-written by Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh. Two of the most prolific thriller writers of today, Rogue River Series, are set in the small town of Solitude, OR.

Stevie Taylor returns to her hometown after her father, the town’s Police Chief passes away due to a heart attack. Having survived some gruesome crimes in LAPD as a cop, Stevie wants nothing more than to stay away from the past pain and reconnect with her roots as a patrol office in her hometown.

Her return coincides with the death of a teenager under suspicious circumstances, and with the meeting of Zane Duncan, the new Chief of Police. In a town where everyone knows everyone, and everyone keeps everyone in sight, Stevie and Zane have to team up to get to the bottom of these death as there seem to be more bodies turning up. The flare of desire and chemistry that ignites between Stevie and Zane is a sure surprise for both, but something that they both like to take it further.

I always love the way Kendra etches her characters. She gives them so many layers of depth and individuality; it’s like peeling an onion, as you get to know their strengths and weaknesses, one layer a time. Kendra does a brilliant job of keeping the narration open and pure, with feelings and emotions decked out, with a hint of secrets that may divide the small town, and keeping the essence of a small town’s thinking and beliefs. The aura of anticipation as to what’s going to happen next or the blossoming relationship between Stevie and Zane, only adds more excitement to the story. On Her Father’s Grave keeps you glued until the last page.

The icing on the cake and this shows the prowess of a seasoned writer, is how she manages not to leave it as a cliffhanger, yet she makes us yearn and moan for more. The desire to get to the next book is so strong, that no reader will be able to resist getting to the next three books…. not a chance!

These are short novellas of four in the series, with Kendra working one end of an angle featuring Stevie and Zane, and Melinda caricaturing Carly and Seth from the other end, both teams with one single goal to get to the evil behind the killings by an unidentified drug.

Can’t wait to read how Melinda Leigh’s given life to the characters of Carly Taylor and Seth Harding in the second book, “Gone To Her Grave”.

Who can resist the Cavanaugh Brothers and their charm? The second book in the series of the Cavanaugh Brothers, “Broken” takes us close to the life and insecurities of James Cavanaugh. A man tormented by a painful past, a past that keeps him away from love and woman, yet has an uncanny ability to talk to horses. Called the horse whisperer, and amassing millions to his name, James Cavanaugh stays away from any relationships until he comes across Sheridan O’Neil.

Sheridan works for Deacon Cavanaugh (Branded) and oversees his construction and business. Beautiful, sassy and extremely big at heart, she is drawn to James like no other. Despite the pain from her past, and having no one to call as a family in her life, she tackles every day by the horns, and has a great positive attitude. I loved Sheirdan’s character so much – calls a spade a spade, sassy mouth and such a sweetheart of a friend!

With Sheridan confessing her feelings for James, it’s up to James to get over his past of guilt and make sure he doesn’t lose Sheridan to his insecurities. He needs to find a way to trust Sheridan with his heart and love, leaving the fear of failure behind.

Filled with witty banter between James and Sheridan, a mystery shrouding the future of the Cavanaugh brothers as they try to solve the murder of their sister, “Broken” is a flirty ride of love, compassion, trust and support.

Laura Wright pens another scintillating story around the Triple C Ranch and the Cavanaugh Brothers. A definite keeper in my collection!

Here’s another fabulous author on the way to making her own destiny. I read Elisabeth Barrett’s “Star Harbor Series” and totally fell in love with the Grayson brothers. Now she is out with the second book in her West Coast Holiday Series” (first being Christmas In Tahoe).

NewYearsInNapa-ElisabethBarrett-Oct2014

“New Year’s In Napa” brings Amanda Aligheri to the beautiful wine country of Napa, CA. A biotechnology researcher, she is driven by a past to spend her every waking moment in her Silicon Valley laboratory. But now, she wants to bring a balance to her life and is hoping to make some resolutions for the coming new year. As her friend Annie is getting ready to wed Chase, they plan to meet in Napa to spend some time and do all wedding things. Of course coming to Napa also brings Amanda up close and personal, again with Liam Flynn, the one guy who is more than capable of stealing her heart.

Smart, sexy and beautiful Amanda has been giving Liam Flynn sleepless nights for the past two years, and having her at his doorstep is his one chance to make sure there are more steps coming to make her a permanent fixture in his life. A software engineer by heart, he leaves his chances of making even more money in software, to help his father at the winery, when he suffers a heart attack. Handsome, smart and cool, and he really needs to keep his patience to convince Mandy that commitment can be a wonderful thing.

A sweet and perfect story to read, curled up in my favorite couch with hot chocolate as two beautiful people, try to overcome their insecurities and make a future with each other. No thrills and frills except a charming narration of emotions, love and support that warms my heart!
