War is never beautiful. Neither are the consequences of war. It tears families apart leaving behind shards of a broken life. Some are lucky enough to go over the other side with minimum consequences, yet some are not strong enough to weather the remnants of a nightmare they endure day in day out, to give us a blanket of protection and peace.

Catherine Mann’s “Shelter Me”, a first in her new series, Second Chance Ranch, takes us up close and personal to the McDaniels, a military family dealing with the death of a son, father and a husband, Allen McDaniel. Nestled in the sunny fields of Tennessee, the McDaniel family runs a Second Chance Rescue., an operation that borders on bankruptcy and strong opposition from some neighbors.

Into this storm come two arrivals, Trooper, the fallen General’s special war dog and his guardian, Staff Sergeant Mike Kowalski. For the latter, it is a bittersweet reunion with his one-time sweetheart Sierra and for Sierra, seeing Mike again brings forth all the memories of a love that was cut short. Thrown together in taking care of the ranch, they rediscover each other, stoking the embers into a flame of love.
ShelterMe-CMann-Aug2014

Catherine is very eloquent portraying the feelings of a family going through pain and loss and dealing with them. From an Alzheimer grandfather to a rebellious teenager Nathan to a war widow Lacey to a young Sierra trying to hold everything together, “Shelter Me” explores the trials and tribulations of a family who lost more than just a family member. It brings out the desperation of a wife who lost her very soul at war, a teenage boy who misses his father and does not know how to handle the grief, and a grandfather who swings between reality and forgetfulness and a daughter who puts aside her dreams to hold her family together.

“Shelter Me” is also the story of Trooper who plays a silent role taking the fallen General’s place through his own humorous point of view. I loved the way each member was given page-time for us to understand their feelings of guilt, insecurities and frustrations. It takes us on an emotional journey of loss, love and second chances, and that things will fall into place as they are meant to be. And oh my! The epilogue was ultra sweet and poignant and leaves you so very happy!

This is a great start to a new series, and I can’t wait to read about Lacey and Nathan, who hopefully get their own HEAs.

I forgot what an entertaining writer Julie Garwood is!!!! She mixes the right doses of romance and thrill to make her books enjoyable and go back to them for seconds. I’ve always loved her Buchanan-Renard Series, my all time favorite is “Heartbreaker”, and did not realize how much I missed them. It was wonderful reading “Fast Track”, with lot of writing space for Reagan and Alec and Sophie and Jack to make their presence felt.

Cordelia is raised by her father and turns out to be a sweet and successful lady teaching chemistry and involved in a whole bunch of other activities. The death of her father brings to light the truth behind her mother’s supposed death leading to a threat on her life.

FastTrack-JulieGarwood-July2014Aiden Hamilton owns the Hamilton chain of hotels and is Reagan’s brother. Arrogant and bossy, he gets involved in Cordie’s family drama. The danger plaguing Cordelia raises his protective instincts and literally jails her in his penthouse after an attempt on her life that could have proved fatal.

The banter among all is fun to read, it was charming to see how life was treating the married couples. Aiden and Cordelia finally get into each other and obviously end up together. More than any character development, the story was just a nice read of romance and suspense. The unconditional love and support among the friends was a treat to read.

Witty dialogues, charming relationships, intense romance and a twist of mystery and danger, make “Fast Track” a good and enjoyable read.

Within These Walls – find a story of pain and survival…

Within These Walls – find a story of love and sacrifice…

Within These Walls – meet Lailah and Jude with their story of faith and hope….

WithinTheseWalls-Pic-CoverReveal-July2014

Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

I am not strong. I am just a survivor of circumstance

Isn’t that what we all do? Survive?

Each of us has our own set of circumstances to muddle through. Mine are just

more…complicated.

Born with a severe heart defect, I’ve seen the inside of a hospital room more than

my own bedroom.

I was drowning, a prisoner to the illness that owned me, until he appeared. He

thinks he’s blocked out the world with his tattoos and hard exterior, but I see the

real Jude, the one he so desperately wants to forget.

But is he the answer to my prayers or will he break my already damaged heart

forever?

My name is Lailah Buchanan, and this is our story of hope, redemption and

sacrificing it all for the one you love.

This is one of the most beautiful and classy covers I’ve come across….mark your calendars everyone – August 18 is the day to get in “Within These Walls”

Here comes another first for me – Anna Sullivan’s “Hideaway Cove”, second in her Windfall Island Series. Set off the coast of Maine, Windfall Island is a charming and lovable cove, of people who have lived there all their lives, of protecting their own townspeople, and of legacies and secrets.

Jessi Randal has lived her whole life on the island and she runs a charter plane service with her friend Maggie (Temptation Bay). Holden Abbot comes to the island in search of a missing heir of the Stanhope’s.

Left alone when she gets pregnant with Benjamin, Jessi has survived and created a whole new life around Benji. An excellent mother and a great friend, she sacrifices all her needs and desires to raise her son, and she does a fine job. When confronted with Benji’s father, loved the way she stands for herself and her son. The dialogue of a girl deserted, the pain of an unmarried mother raising her son alone amidst gossip, the strength and conviction of a woman who had managed to survive, was a brilliant read. I was never so proud of Jessi when she makes Lance’s entrance into their lives miserable.

Hold is the mesmerizing guy who falls for Jessi and loves her son unconditionally. As he continues to research and search for the missing heir, he breaks down the walls around Jessi. The possibility that Jessi and her son may be heirs bring out all the protective instincts in him. Love the way he goads Jessi into thinking of her needs and desires, and he was man enough to acknowledge that he is irrevocably in love with her. Their relationship was one roller-coaster ride of secrets, pain, stubbornness, love and finally trusting each other with their lives. What an enjoyable read!

And the heir is still on the loose. Anna Sullivan maintains the intrigue and mystery surrounding the missing heir and the link to Windfall Island, leaving us wanting for more. Hideaway Cove can be read as a standalone, but for the uninitiated, it may be more pleasurable to start with her first book, “Temptation Bay” (Maggie and Dexter). I enjoyed reading it out of sequence, but “Temptation Bay” is alreayd in my list of TBR 🙂

A very charming, enthralling and captivating love story with a twist of mystery! Can’t wait to read the third in this series, “Secret Harbor”, and the mystery of the heir may just get a closure.

Lisa Jackson writes some intriguing mystery thrillers and always loved them. I really loved her “McCaffertys” series. In her “To Die” series, Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli take the front seat as detectives in Grizzly Falls, Montana.

There is a lot happening in Grizzly Falls this time. A couple of bodies of young women appearing with their ring fingers missing, keeps Pescoli and Regan on their toes. Added to this, Dan Grayson gets shot in a previous story and now he is in coma with no chance of recovery, and the new fill in sheriff Hooper Blackwater has big shoes to fill and appease the residents of Grizzly Falls.
DeservesToDie-LisaJackson-July2014

In parallel, Anna Marie is on the run from her psychotic ex-husband and she seems to have become the mistress of disguise trying to stay safe. Unfortunately her plans to stay safe and get help from Grayson goes down the drain and she realizes, has another past lover boy on her trail as the bounty hunter.

“Deserves To Die” is the sixth in this series. Reading it alone would be more enjoyable as Lisa Jackson tries to bring new developments with the Graysons, changes in Alvarez’s life, but her true fans may not like it as much as the others. It definitely has some exciting moments and the ending was real good. Somehow bringing in Grayson’s family did not sit very well with me, unless it is leading to more in her future books in this series.

All in all, it’s definitely not Lisa’s best, yet it is good enough for a quick read.
