Sometimes love is better the second time around . . .

Mia Gibbs spent her marriage putting her husband’s needs before her own. And now, after a painful divorce, she’s building a new life for herself and her two daughters back home at Firefly Lake. The last thing she needs is a man to complicate things. But former bad boy turned friend Nick McGuire—and the one kiss they’ve shared-has turned everything upside down . . .

Attorney Nick McGuire wasn’t meant to be a family man. His career has always been his focus and after taking time out to help his mother, he’s ready to get back to the city . . . until Mia and her daughters arrive at Firefly Lake. Mia is beautiful and intriguing, and it doesn’t take long to realize being “just friends” will never be enough. As the summer nights turn colder, Nick will have to choose between the life he’s always wanted . . . and the woman he can’t live without.

EXCERPT:

“Did you enjoy the play?” Nick leaned over to speak into her ear.

She jumped and then blinked as the overhead lights went on. “It was nice.”

“Nice?” He raised one dark eyebrow and grinned. “It was a murder mystery where the villain killed his so-called friends with poisoned martini olives. Nice isn’t the first word that comes to my mind.”

“I meant it had a good plot. I didn’t guess who did it until the end.” Probably because she hadn’t paid attention.

“I knew it was the town clerk all along.”

“The town clerk? I thought it was the caterer.”

“When he isn’t on the boards, the actor who played the caterer is the town clerk over in Kincaid.” Nick chuckled. “He’s always cast as the villain in local theater productions. Cat says it’s because he has evil eyes. He grew up in Firefly Lake, and every Halloween when we were kids, he dressed as a monster and scared her half to death.”

“I’m a city girl, remember?” Easy banter, keep it light and pretend everything was like it had always been between them. “I’m still not used to the kind of community here and how everyone seems to be connected to everyone else.”

“There’s a lot that goes along with that community.” Nick got to his feet and shepherded Mia through the crowd to the exit. His big frame sheltered her and made her feel safe and protected. “People know your business and think they have a right to talk about you because their grandmother’s second cousin was related to your great-aunt by marriage three times removed. They post pictures of you on Facebook.”

Mia’s face heated. A copy of that Facebook picture had appeared on Gabrielle’s kitchen table. She should have gotten rid of it but instead, Mia had taken it upstairs and tucked it into the bottom of her suitcase. Then ignored Gabrielle’s pointed looks.

“Do you want to get ice cream? Simard’s Creamery has a stand across the street from where we had dinner.”

The intimate bistro with tables for two, where the muted candlelight had softened the planes of Nick’s face, and they’d bumped knees under the small table to send jolts of awareness through her.

“You like your tiger tail ice cream, don’t you?” Although Nick’s voice held a teasing note, something hot and elemental sparked in his eyes. Then his expression changed again, and he was the Nick who’d helped her with her mom’s foundation on all those late-night phone calls last winter. The friend she called when she wanted to talk about anything and everything.

Mia stopped in the middle of the rutted track in the field where they’d left the car. The long grass tickled her bare legs below her sundress, and she shivered in the cool night air. They’d go for ice cream and then Nick would take her home. They’d drive the familiar highway back to Firefly Lake and talk about the play and how well Charlie and Lexie were doing. Safe, easy topics.

He’d drop her off at Harbor House, and she’d go upstairs and get into Georgia’s single bed beneath the tattered travel posters. Alone. Like all those other nights she’d spent alone, denying what she wanted and making excuses.

“I changed my mind. I don’t want ice cream.” Her voice shook.

“Mia, I—” He made a choked sound.

“I thought about what you said.” If she didn’t go for this, she’d always regret it and wonder about what might have been. And maybe a fling with Nick was exactly what she needed to put the last ghosts of her marriage behind her. “You’re right. We’re both single and neither of us wants something the other one can’t give.”

“Are you sure?”

She tried to laugh. “We’d have to be discreet.”

“Of course.” The raw desire on his face was replaced by a glimpse of what might have been vulnerability.

“I like you, and I know you won’t hurt me.” Because she’d locked the part of her that could be hurt deep inside. “We both have needs.” She kicked the grass with her sandals and rubbed her bottom lip.

“I like you, too. What Jay did was wrong, and I want to make sure you understand I’d never do anything like that.” A pulse fluttered in Nick’s throat. “We might not have a relationship, but I wouldn’t sleep with anybody else if I slept with you.”

Mia looked at the night sky, where stars twinkled above the forested hills. When she was little, she’d wished on stars and believed in a happy-ever-after. But she was an adult, and life had made her wiser and destroyed her childish belief in magic and wishes. “Where do we go from here?”

“I’ll take you back to Mom’s if you want me to.” Nick’s arm brushed the curve of her shoulder through her light sweater, and the tremble inside her kicked up. “If you’re not ready.”

She was ready all right and had been even before he kissed her the first time. “I want this.” She lifted her face to his as a cloud scudded across the moon. “I want you.”

I started off my first review of the Grey Justice Series “Nothing To Lose”, with the following –

“Funny thing about humans is, at our best we can be the most noble of animals, but if not governed by law and justice, some tend to become the monsters of all monsters! Money, power and fame are not vices in the right hands, but once they get into the monsters’ hands, and innocent lives are at stake, it’s a different ball game.” A ball game that doesn’t differentiate between family and the community.

TooFarGone-GrayJustice#3-ChristyReece

And the domino affect of this is the premise of Christy Reece’s Gray Justice Series, as it follows the Slaters and their rise from ashes of evil to a life of redemption and love, with the powerful Grey Justice at the helm, and to protect and serve and bring justice to the innocents that are pawns in the evil game of power, cartels and supremacy.

Exonerating the false charges that landed Johan Slater in prison, sharing the same DNA of a monster father and a sibling that have been slain to ashes, Jonah Slater is flying on the wings of vengeance to bring justice to his murdered fiancée. Keeping Gabriella Mendoza safe from her cartel family is just another job to keep him occupied, never realizing that destiny is in his home. And he falls in love with a warrior woman, with a kind and tender heart.

Planning her own abduction from her cartel family takes courage and patience and Gabriella has been trained very well to endure and wait for the right moment. An act that is supported and run by Justice and the consequences of it lands her in the protection of Jonah Slater, before she can be acclimated into a new life with a new identity. The pain, the horror and the torture that Gabby endures in the hands of her carter family is unfathomable and she manages to escape with her positivity still intact.

Jonah Slater is intimidatingly large, surly and on occasion quite rude, and Gabby found him both fascinating and enormously attractive.”

Gabriella Mendoza had courage and them some! She was going to need every bit of it to deal with what came next.”

And that pretty much sums up these amazing characters created by Christy Reece. “Too Far Gone” is Gabriella’s story of survival, courage, tenacity, and patience, all wrapped up in a package of kindness, affection and selflessness. “Too Far Gone” is evil for Jonah and he’ll protect what belongs to him with his last breath.

And let me assure you that each book can be read as a standalone, but what fun is it not knowing how and where it had all begun…

It’s always a pleasure reading Nora Roberts and I will honestly admit that I can be totally biased where she is concerned. And in my opinion, no reviews can do justice to her stories.

MindOverMatter-NoraRoberts-July2017

“Mind Over Matter” is a republish and it is very nice visiting her characters, David Brady and A.J. Fields, total opposites that destiny seems to bring them together. David’s search for a psychic to star in his paranormal documentary brings him to A.J. Fields, an agent. As they pit against each other during the interviews and the filming, sparks flare and so does love.

Nora Roberts is a master at weaving stories of intrigue and passion. Her flair of writing needs to be read to enjoy her art and every time I read an intimate scene in her books, it is a rhythm of passion and a lyric of love. I loved Aurora Fields as she tries to fend the attraction for David, and David himself is a worthy character of her love. Add in a couple of surprises and “Mind Over Matter” is a pleasure read of suspense, love and family.

Book two in Marina Adair’s Sequoia Lake series, Ford Jamison makes “Every Little Kiss” count to woo and protect Liv Preston and her adorable little boy.

EveryLittleKiss-SequoiaLake#2-MarinaAdair-Jul2017

After her husband’s death Liv Preston moves to Sequoia Lake with her six year old for a fresh start and her main goal is to make sure her special needs son can transition into his new life and get back the smiles he seems to have lost. Working hard and trying to fight life’s everyday battles, Liv never saw the spark of second chance living right next door.

Head of the K-9 Division in Reno, Ford Jamison comes to Sequoia Lake to make sure the past that he cannot seem to forget is managing life alright. As a search and rescue member, he understands loss, gut instincts and rescues, but he never would have thought his heart would get in the way of his life, and the past would speed bump his future, with secrets that may take Liv and her little boy away from him.

Another heartwarming story from Marina Adair, “Every Little Kiss” is a beautiful story of second chances, redemption and the warmth of friendship and care, as serene and gorgeous as Sequoia Lake and it’s residents.

“Every Little Kiss” is sweet, filled with promise and a lifetime of love.

Kyle Ames: Seduction. Pursuit

Hannah McIntire: Enticement. Temptation

And Sapphire Falls is witness to another romance. This time it is their very own and lovable doctor Kyle Ames and the woman who had left him a couple of years ago, Hannah McIntire and who is now back in Sapphire giving him nightmares of the erotic kind!

AfterYou-SapphireFalls-ErinNicholas-July2017.jpg

Well-laid plans go awry. Kyle’s game of seduction and Hannah’s supposedly rejection of his pursuit falls apart as they both know that the love they feel for each other was never erased. With the “supportive” and “gentle” nudging of his friends, with romantic grandmothers thrown into the equation of bringing these two together, Kyle and Hannah never stood a chance of getting separated a second time round.

Erin Nicholas does what she is the best at; writing charismatic love stories in Sapphire Falls, a quintessential town with some sexy alphas and sassy heroines, lovable and warm elders and extended family that come for a visit and succumb to the magic of Sapphire Falls. What always gets me with her stories is her depth of portraying relationships. Be it humor and fun, love and care, support and friendship, they are all so well placed and eloquently written, it is very hard not to laugh and cry, sigh and gasp, frown and pout with her characters.

“After You” is a story of pursuit and seduction for Kyle and Hannah. And for the readers an enticement and temptation they can’t avoid.
